Code of Conduct

How everyone in the OpenSTEM Help community is expected to behave.

Last updated: October 15, 2026

1. Our values

Respect, patience, curiosity, honesty and safety. Everyone here is learning, and everyone deserves to feel welcome.

2. Everyone

  • Be kind and respectful. No bullying, teasing, put-downs or discrimination based on race, gender, religion, ability, background or anything else.
  • Use appropriate language and keep conversations on STEM topics.
  • Keep personal information private, yours and others'.
  • Be on time, or let us know in advance if you need to cancel.
  • Report anything that makes you uncomfortable.

3. Students and parents

  • Ask questions freely; there are no silly questions.
  • Do your best to try a problem first and share where you got stuck.
  • Remember mentors are volunteers and fellow students, not paid tutors. Mentors will not do homework for you.
  • Parents and guardians should be available nearby during online sessions for younger students and keep all communication within the platform.

4. Mentors

  • Explain, don't just give answers. Help students understand the "why".
  • Only teach subjects you are comfortable with and be honest when you do not know something.
  • Stay within the approved channel; never share personal contact details or connect on social media.
  • Never accept gifts or payment. Never ask for or share personal images or information.
  • Do not discuss non-academic, personal or sensitive topics with students.
  • Record your volunteer hours honestly and accurately.
  • Report any safety concern immediately.

5. Academic integrity

Mentors support learning; they don't complete graded assignments or assessments for students. Students should not ask for answers to be given during tests or exams.

6. Consequences

Breaches may lead to a warning, session cancellation, suspension or permanent removal. Serious safety breaches are reported to parents or guardians and, where appropriate, authorities. See Child Safety & Reporting.
